Common issues facing a new mum:

  • Tiredness
  • Anxiety
  • Stubborn weight gain
  • Thyroid issues
  • General hormone imbalances

This is such a common scenario with the new mums I see in my clinic. As a new mum, you have just grown a baby and a placenta inside of you. You have delivered both and are now looking after a baby. You may be breastfeeding too. You will be lacking sleep, probably have some levels of stress over having a new baby and you are likely not eating well as you are so busy looking after your newborn. These all add up to a lack of good nutrition to look after yourself, let alone recovery from everything to do with having a baby.

My most simple advice for new mums is to eat! Eat like you did before you had a baby. I don’t mean eat loads of sugary junk food “to give you energy”, I mean eat well and eat three meals per day with a mid-morning and mid-afternoon snack. This balances blood sugar and will give you better energy and health recovery than simple sugar fixes. Most mums are barely eating at all, they are putting a lot more effort into looking after their baby than themselves. Even if your baby is now older you may still not be back into a routine of eating more nourishingly for yourself, or you may even be eating better but still not feeling “back to your old self”.

Many mums I see are still fatigued many months after having their baby when they think they should be feeling more energetic, especially if their baby may be sleeping better. In this case, some extra help is required to really bump up your nutritional status and probably correct some vitamin and mineral deficiencies.

Eating frequently throughout the day with a balanced meal of protein, fat, and carbohydrates balances your blood sugar which in turn can help balance your hormones too. It also gives you a very nice wide array of nutrition. I often suggest to mums to eat in this way and also take into account their “Body Biotype”. This is a way of looking at each person as an individual and catering their meal plans according to body shape and weight gain areas.

However, deeper support may be beneficial for you to speed recovery and using supplements can do this very nicely, especially when they are specifically targeted to support you and the issues you may have. For example, different supplements are used to target the adrenals (stress organs), thyroid, fatigue, hormone detoxification and various other processes that all intertwine in a new mum.

I use an EAV device called the Avatar to help find the organs that most need to be supported and even the order in which they should be approached. Read more about the Avatar here: Avatar by Christian Bates

The Avatar can quickly and non-invasively look at the energetic health of each organ system, such as the thyroid, adrenals, nervous system, liver, bowel and more. It can then help find the correct supplements to support the organ system. On top of this nutrition, diet and food intolerances can be discussed.
