Why massage?

Everyone suffers from tight muscles at some point in their life, whether it’s due to stress, injury or simple overuse. Muscle tension can range from a mild, constant irritation to outright pain. Look at it as your muscles’ way of telling you that they’re not working to their full potential and something needs to be done about it.

Some people ignore muscle tension and hope it will go away, and sometimes it does – albeit temporarily. It doesn’t mean the muscle has stretched and repaired itself, it just means it’s eased off a little, leaving the pain and discomfort to return if not treated properly. Leaving a tight muscle not only restricts movement around the affected area, but will make it likely to spread and affect the areas around it too.

Muscles can become stressed and weakened when they are not being used as a group. Common causes of muscle overuse and tightness include sitting in the same position for an extended period of time, using one arm or hand more than the other, undergoing repetitive heavy movements like lifting, bending and twisting or exercise regularly with an emphasis on one particular muscle. Stretching can help prevent symptoms of overuse: just 15 to 20 minutes, three to four times a week can make a big difference and act as a pre-emptive strike, but if the muscle has already become tight and painful you will need treatment.

Stress and tension are a big factor with tight muscles. When we’re not feeling relaxed, our shoulders rise and our jaws clench – you may even clench your buttock muscles too! The muscles will feel hard, inflexible and “crunchy”, resulting in discomfort around the neck, shoulders and arms and sometimes causing headaches.

Having a massage will lengthen out the affected muscles, allowing them the flexibility they need to do their job properly. After the massage, you will feel lighter, more relaxed and refocused. Breathing will become easier as the muscles around your ribcage have been stretched; your arms and legs will move freely without restriction and you will be left mentally refreshed and restored.

Massage improves circulation and helps the body get rid of toxins by stimulating the blood flow. It can also speed up recovery times by boosting your immune system. Regular massage will help prevent future muscle discomfort, lower your stress levels, help lower your blood pressure, combat insomnia, treat menopause symptoms and improve your digestion. What’s not to love!
